Hi,
My daughter has a small dog. The dog is about 8 or 9 months old. The problem she has is getting the dog to come when she calls it. The dog will not come when called. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob
Bob,
Many factors play into this...the dog's breed (some have higher will to please than others), the dog's training (does it actually know a recall command?), the relationship between your daughter and the dog (is your daughter perceived as the dog's leader), former abuse of a recall (i.e., scolding the dog after it comes to her). Any of these factors can be addressed if your daughter works with a reputable trainer/behaviorist for a couple sessions.
Supplement that with some good research (read Cesar Millan's books "Cesar's Way" and "Be a Pack Leader"), watch "The Dog Whisperer" tv show on the National Geographic channel, and seek out a trainer who follows Cesar's methods of pack leadership. Also, check out my blog post, "Coming When Called"
