Make Your Own Flea/Tick Collar

The world of holistic medicine opens up all sort of possibilities for pet care. Here's a tip I heard on the radio a while back, from Dr. Marty Goldstein who is Martha Stewart's veterinarian.

According to Dr. Goldstein, you can make your dog an effective yet safe (nonchemical) flea and tick repellent by moistening a bandana with a few drops of one or a combination of these ingredients:

  • Eucalyptus oil

  • Neem oil

  • Geranium oil

You can find these ingredients at a health food store. Also, eucalyptus oil can be found at crafts stores. The ingredients are nontoxic and economical compared to the commercial flea/tick collars (which are laden with toxic chemicals and don't work very well anyway...) When the bandana gets dirty, just wash it out and reapply the oils.

Please don't use the eucalyptus from the craft store. These are usually the poorest grade of essential oil.
